DE SCHAAPHERDER

DE SCHAAPHERDER (FRANS HEIRBAUT)

In rural Sinaai, numerous shepherds used to wander with their flocks. One of them was Jef Smekens, the sculptor’s neighbour. The shepherd and his faithful dog  are inseparable, they need each other. The man in boots stands still for a moment, one hand rests on his staff, the overcoat spread open and the other hand resting on his side. His grin betrays a touch of irony. He appears to be contemplating the situation philosophically. The whole scene exudes the simplicity of the countryside and the thoughtful slowness of a bygone era, a truly bucolic scene. What a contrast with the turbulence of modern life  and the noise of  traffic rushing by. The shepherd’s splendidly modelled  weather-beaten face and the execution of his outfit bear witness to the skill of this artist.
