Dear Art Lover,
if you are going to Brugge, here is a tip for a visit worthwhile.
Pride and Solace: medieval books of hours and their readers
The Groeninge Museum in Bruges is unpacking a very special exhibition: some thirty medievel books of hours from the Middle Ages.
They are real gems: small books with prayers and magnificent miniatures, which persons carried with them....
One of the masterpieces is a 13th century psalm book of Margaret, Countess of Flanders and Hainaut. Some of the pieces have never been shown.
It is curious to note that painters like Memling and Peter Christ portrayed characters with a book of hours in hand.
The exhibits come from the Bruges Public Library, the Jean van Caloen Foundation and the Flemish Government, among others.
Groeninge Museum Bruges until Oct. 7, 2025 - closed Wednesdays.
Included is admission to the permanent exhibition of the Groeninge Museum.
